In Slavic mythology, Perun is the highest god of the pantheon and the god of thunder and lightning. His other attributes were fire, mountains, iris, eagle, firmament (in Indo-European languages, this was joined with the notion of the sky of stone), weapons (the hammer, axe (Axe of Perun and arrow), and war. He was first associated with weapons made of stone and later with those of metal. Perun is the mythical smith so he is often associated with mining and metallurgy and his name seems also to be related to the ending of modern name of copper.
Gromoviti znaci or thunder marks such as these are ancient symbols of Perun, which are often engraved upon roof beams of village houses, particularly in Eastern Slavic populations, to protect them from lightning bolts. It is conjectured their circular shape symbolises ball lightning.
